How Custom Jewellery Is Made — From Consultation to Delivery

Jay Gems Bangkok  ·  03 15 2026  ·  custom jewellery making process

Commissioning a piece of custom jewellery is one of the most rewarding things you can do — but for many people, the process feels mysterious and intimidating. What actually happens between your first conversation and the moment you hold the finished piece? Here is a detailed look at how Jay Gems Bangkok creates custom jewellery, from start to finish.

Stage 1 — The Initial Consultation

Every custom jewellery piece begins with a conversation. At Jay Gems, we take time to understand your vision in depth — the occasion, your aesthetic preferences, the person who will wear the piece, your budget and your timeline. We ask questions, look at reference images together, and discuss what is and is not possible within your parameters.

This consultation can take place in person at our Bangkok showroom or virtually via video call — we work with clients across Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and internationally. There is no obligation at this stage, and the consultation itself is free.

Stage 2 — Design Sketches and CAD Renderings

Once we have a clear brief, our design team creates initial sketches of the proposed piece. These hand-drawn designs give a first impression of the overall look and proportions, and allow us to explore different options quickly before committing to the details.

The approved design is then developed into a detailed CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model. The CAD rendering shows the piece in three dimensions — from every angle — and allows you to see exactly how the finished jewellery will look before any metal is cast or stone is set. This is your opportunity to request changes, refine proportions, adjust details. We do not proceed until you are completely satisfied with the design.

Stage 3 — Stone Selection

For pieces featuring diamonds or coloured gemstones, we present a curated selection of stones that meet your specification — the right shape, quality, carat weight and budget. You choose the stone that speaks to you. We provide full grading information for every diamond we present, and we are completely transparent about pricing.

Jay Gems sources diamonds and gemstones directly from our network across Antwerp, Tel Aviv, Mumbai and Dubai — giving us access to an exceptional range of stones at prices that reflect direct sourcing.

Stage 4 — Casting and Metalwork

With the design approved and the stone selected, our master craftsmen begin production. The process starts with casting — molten precious metal is poured into a mould derived from the CAD model, producing a rough metal form of the piece. This is then cleaned, refined and worked by hand — filing, grinding and polishing — until the metal achieves the precise shape, proportions and surface quality specified in the design.

Stage 5 — Stone Setting

Stone setting is one of the most skilled stages of jewellery making. Our setters secure each diamond or gemstone into the metal using specialised tools — tiny burins and gravers — working under magnification. The stones must be positioned precisely, secured firmly and aligned perfectly. An error at this stage cannot be undone without removing and resetting the stone.

Different setting styles — prong, bezel, pavé, channel — require different techniques, and our setters are expert in all of them.

Stage 6 — Finishing and Polishing

With the stones set, the piece undergoes finishing — a process of progressive polishing that brings the metal surface to its final state. High-polish areas are brought to a mirror finish. Textured or brushed areas are worked to the specified finish. Every surface is inspected under magnification.

Stage 7 — Quality Inspection

Before any piece leaves our Bangkok facility, it undergoes a rigorous quality inspection. We check stone security — every stone is tested to ensure it cannot move or be displaced. We verify dimensions against the original CAD specifications. We examine the finish under magnification. We confirm the metal purity. Only pieces that pass every check proceed to delivery.

Stage 8 — Delivery

Your finished piece is delivered in person at our Bangkok showroom or shipped fully insured to your door anywhere in the world. The total process — from initial consultation to delivery — typically takes 3–6 weeks, depending on the complexity of the piece and the availability of the chosen stone.
